Taipei: A fire at a residential building in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung has killed at least 46 people and injured 41 others.
A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a 40-year-old building in Yancheng County, Kaohsiung, just after midnight. The fire was brought under control and extinguished a few hours after dawn.
The Kaohsiung Fire Department said in a statement that a search of the building had confirmed the deaths of 46 people.
The mayor of the area, Sen Ci-mai, said many of the large areas of the building were unoccupied. Therefore, large-scale casualties have been avoided, he said.

Sources said the building previously housed restaurants, karaoke lounges and a theater.
Government sources say the Taiwanese government is investigating the cause of the blaze, which has claimed many lives.
